Metallic Gestures
The concept of exploring how a gesture operates spatially, in two or three dimensions, is what has driven the production of my ‘Metallic Gestures’ series of carborundum embossings, where the use of metallic chine-collé seeks to create a parallel between the field of action in three-dimensional space and its translation to the singular plane. Through this unconventional approach to printmaking, I aim to echo the actions and gestures used in the sculptural side of my practice, while subverting their impulsive nature through the reproducibility of carborundum printmaking. The lustre of silver, copper, gold and other metallics in this body of work offers an ethereal quality to the overall compositions, suggesting a dream-like state of consciousness. Meanwhile, by reflecting and distorting the viewer and their surrounding environment, the monochromatic sheen of these works aims to establish a dialogue between the ‘frozen gestures’ captured in each embossing and the contrastingly unending movement, change and instantaneity of ‘real time’ which is continuously performing the mirrored surfaces.
