Sculptures and 'action painting' shown at Open Studios, School of Design, University of Leeds, 7th December 2016. An exhibition of First, Second and Final Year work from students on the BA (Hons) Art & Design course.
Action, gesture and process lie at the core of my practice. Working with a material-led frame of mind this semester has resulted in sculptural explorations of physicality, weight, balance, solidity and phenomenology, in relation to the concept of colour as material.
The actions of pouring, spilling and throwing pigmented liquid polyurethane foam on balloons and other surfaces have triggered a dialogue between the performance of making and its outcome, in turn questioning which should be considered the artwork.
A further concept I have addressed is that of bridging the gap between the two and three-dimensional. The ‘action painting’ exhibited aims to achieve this by juxtaposing paint on a singular plane with sculptural components that echo the force and process used to produce each mark.
