'Biomorphic Vessels', a series of sculptures constructed from pigmented polyurethane foam, balloons, acrylic paint, and rope. This work was shown at 'Appetite', the Central Saint Martins MA Interim Show, held at Apiary Studios, Hackney, London, 8th to 11th March 2018.
Seeking to explore the referential power of abstraction to call to mind objects, imagery and organisms from our personal experiences of materiality, this work comprised a series of biomorphic masses of vibrant colour. Above two floor-based vessels, each suspended sculpture was hung at a different height from the gallery ceiling to create a sense of tension and dynamism, while intending for the viewer to encounter the works in line with various levels of their body.
Exploring notions of synaesthesia and haptic colourism, this installation considered how these concepts operate in an anthropomorphic way as the viewer was confronted by the sculptures one by one. Serving as records of playful material enquiry, this body of work aimed to establish a sense of direction through the frozen fluidity of once liquid colour. Simultaneously, these sculptures sought to disrupt the semiotics of the gallery to affect the way the viewer moved and behaved in the space.
