ALCHEMY: "a seemingly magical process of transformation, creation, or combination".
Sculptures and prints shown at 'Alchemy' Degree Show, School of Design, University of Leeds, 15th-23rd June 2017. An exhibition of Final Year work from students on the BA (Hons) Art & Design, Fashion Design, Fashion Marketing, Graphic & Communication Design and Textile Design courses.
Action, gesture and process lie at the core of my practice, where the impact of colour on the experience of materiality is a principal concern. By establishing a dialogue between the performance of making and its aftermath, this project questions how we understand evidence of bodily gestures, and which should be considered the artwork: action or outcome.
Using pigmented polyurethane foam and latex balloons, my sculptures’ component materials create a symbiotic relationship, whereby the air in each balloon supports the encrusted poured foam and vice versa. Ranging from constellations of planetary forms to body-scale works, these sculptures exhibit the residue of popping the balloon, creating two-colour environments.
The accompanying prints echo the actions used in my sculptural work, while subverting their impulsive nature through the reproducibility of printmaking. The reflective surface of this series creates a parallel between the three-dimensional field of action and its translation to the singular plane.
